TO AVOID fire accidents that
causes human and financial
losses, hose reels and fire
extinguishers should be
placed at proper and
easy-to-reach areas at the
stores of factories or
warehouses, warned Colonel
Saleh Saeed Al Matrooshi,
department director of Ajman
Civil Defence. |

Colonel Al Matrooshi
personally observed that
sometimes when fire
accidents occur at any
warehouse or stores where
raw materials or finished
products are stored, the
rescue team of the civil
defence finds it hard to
reach the hose reel or the
fire extinguishers that are
somewhere hidden in the
stores with thousands of
materials stored up till the
ceiling. |

He added that the owners of
the factories or warehouse
should ensure that the area
in front of the emergency
exit should be kept empty so
that the workers or
employees can immediately
escape fire without
witnessing any difficulty.
"The emergency exits should
never be blocked by placing
the stored items in front of
them," he warned. |

"Fire accidents can be
easily contained at any
place even before the
arrival of the rescue team
if the fire extinguishers
are placed at an area that
can be easily noticed by any
of the employees or workers
who are willing to control
the fire. We have controlled
a number of fire accidents
where the employees or
workers did not know where
the fire extinguishers were
placed," he explained.

Colonel Al Matrooshi urged
the owners of commercial
stores and warehouses to
avoid storing excessive
quantity of finished
products or raw materials
used for manufacturing
purpose piled above each
other.

"Storing so many items up
till the ceiling of the
storage area can easily
contribute in spreading fire
in short time not only
within the warehouse but to
other neighboring warehouses
as the ceilings are usually
made of aluminum sheets."

"Wood, furniture, plastic,
paper manufacturing and
petroleum substances are
considered highly
inflammable substances that
can easily spread fire from
place to another if the fire
is not controlled
immediately. We urge the
owners of factories and
warehouses to place the fire
extinguishers at proper
places that will make it
easy for the rescue team to
complete their mission,"
Matrooshi noted.
